Mexico pledges greenhouse gas cuts

Go to original article

POZNAN, Poland — Mexico says it will cut greenhouse gas emissions by 50 percent from 2002 levels by 2050.

Environment Secretary Juan Rafael Elvira says he hopes the target will push richer countries to help Mexico with investments needed to meet the goal.

Mexico’s announcement Thursday at U.N. climate talks in the Polish city of Poznan makes it one of the few developing countries to accept a specific national emissions target.

Brazil, China and South Africa among others have also won praise for offering specific plans to fight climate change.

Environmentalists at the talks have criticized some of the world’s richest countries for doing too little to battle global warming
