Japanese Man Makes One Long Layover

Go to original article

A Japanese man has been living in a layover at the Mexico City airport for nearly three months, and he has no plans to leave.

For reasons he has not explained, Hiroshi Nohara has been in Terminal 1 of the Benito Juárez International Airport since Sept. 2, surviving off donations from fast-food restaurants and passengers and becoming something of a national celebrity. The Tokyo native flew into Mexico with a tourist visa and a return ticket, but he never left the airport, eliciting comparisons to the 2004 Tom Hanks movie “The Terminal.” The Japanese Embassy cannot force him to leave, and because Mr. Nohara’s visa is valid, all Mexican officials can do is wait for it to expire in early March. “My life is ‘The Terminal 2,’ ” he said.
