Honduras' Zelaya meets Mexican president

Ousted Honduran President Manuel Zelaya on Tuesday praised the ongoing peaceful resistance in his country to the government that forced him from office.

At a press conference with President Felipe Calderon, Zelaya called the resistance "unheard-of" and thanked the Mexican leader for his support.

"The Honduran people have maintained peaceful resistance for 34 days in an unheard-of way," Zelaya said.

The ousted Honduran leader called the resistance "peaceful, civil and on the streets alongside a general strike by teachers because they feel ashamed to have to explain an imposed government to the nation's children."

He also said that the post-coup government, led by former legislature leader Roberto Micheletti, had been hiding the truth of the coup from the world by suppressing Honduran broadcasters.

Meanwhile, Calderon expressed Mexico's support for Zelaya.

"We receive Zelaya with open arms as we have always done and as we will always do with our brother Honduras," he said. "From the day of the dastardly coup, we have shown solidarity with Honduras and supported the reinstatement of Zelaya as the country's president."

Zelaya, who was forced into exile in a June 28 coup, arrived in Mexico City late Monday.
