Sven gets vote of confidence from Mexican FA

Mexican Football Federation president Justino Compean has insisted Sven-Goran Eriksson's position as coach of El Tri is not at risk.

Eriksson's team suffered a disappointing start to the final stage of the CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying Zone, losing 2-0 in the United States - their fourth away qualifier without a victory.

The result led to a raft of criticism from the media and former players, including Mexico legend Cuauhtemoc Blanco, but Compean said: "Sven cannot have a guillotine over his head.

"He has to work with our confidence and we are giving it to him.

"We will not threaten him, but give him all the support and whatever he needs."

Compean is convinced El Tri will improve their form in the upcoming matches against Costa Rica, El Salvador, Honduras and Trinidad & Tobago to seal a place in South Africa 2010 without the trial of a play-off against a South American team.

"The road to the World Cup has 30 points to play for," Compean said. "We lost the first three, but there are 27 left. I have no doubt we'll be playing at the World Cup.

"He knows how to count. He knows he must win 15 points at home and also collect some away to reach the 20-point mark and be confident.

"We want to qualify for the World Cup through this stage and not the play-off.

"We have appointed Sven to go to South Africa. We've chatted a lot with him. We talk constantly. We trust him. He was appointed to take us to the World Cup."

Eriksson has been heavily linked with the vacant managerial position at Premier League side Portsmouth since the dismissal of Tony Adams.
