Great whites migrate to Gulf of Mexico

Go to original article

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) -- Florida anglers looking to catch a shark should keep their eyes open for great whites.

It's not so much a matter of needing a bigger boat, like in the movie "Jaws." Commercial shark season opened Thursday for the Gulf of Mexico, but great white sharks are a protected species. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission says that anyone who catches a great white must let it go.

While not normally found in the Gulf of Mexico, Bob Hueter, a shark expert with Mote Marine Laboratory in Sarasota, says great whites migrate from northern waters during the winter months.
