The city of Indianapolis is teaming with the government of Hidalgo, Mexico,
to enhance training for public safety officers in both cities.
Mayor Greg Ballard and Hidalgo Gov. Miguel A. Osorio Chong signed a public
safety agreement Monday that will bring Mexican police to Indianapolis for
training and send Indianapolis police and firefighters to Mexico, where they
will learn the Spanish language and culture.
The two cities are formalizing a training program that has been operating
for five years, said metropolitan police Sgt. Matthew Mount.
Since the program began, 90 IMPD officers and 21 Indianapolis firefighters
have completed an intensive language course and a three-week stay in Mexico.
