2009 CONCACAF Beach Soccer Championship Rescheduled For June 17-21

CHICAGO (May 22, 2009) – The qualifying tournament for the CONCACAF
region for the 2009 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup will take place June
17-21 in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. The tournament was originally
scheduled for April 29-May 3 but was postponed due to concerns over
the outbreak of the H1N1 virus in Mexico.
Six teams from CONCACAF will play in two groups of three, with the
top two teams from each group advancing to the tournament semifinals
on Saturday, June 20. The semifinal winners will represent CONCACAF
at the 2009 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup from Nov. 16-22 in Dubai,
United Arab Emirates.
The U.S. was drawn into Group B of the tournament, along with Costa
Rica and Bahamas. Group A consists of defending champion and host
Mexico, El Salvador and Canada. The U.S. will kick off the
tournament against Bahamas at 5 p.m. CT on Wednesday, June 17, and
will close out the group at 5 p.m. on Friday, June 19, against Costa
Rica. The semifinals, along with the match for fifth place, will be
held on Saturday, June 20, and the two finalists will face off on
Sunday, June 21.
The U.S. Beach Soccer National Team has competed in three out of
four Beach Soccer World Cups. The U.S. competed in the inaugural
event in 2005 in Brazil, before returning to the country for the
2006 and 2007 editions of the tournament. After missing out on the
World Cup in 2008, the U.S. will look to qualify for the 2009
tournament, which will be held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates for
the first time.
